The sustainability shortcomings of the Capital Markets Union

In response to the ongoing challenges within the EU Single Market, there is a growing call among EU leaders for greater integration of Member States’ capital markets. Enrico Letta’s report, “Much more than a Market,” has emerged as a key proposal for establishing a Capital Markets Union (CMU) aimed at enhancing the EU’s competitiveness and addressing its green funding gap. With the strong endorsement of Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Letta’s vision has gained significant traction.

However, from FEBEA we believe that while Letta’s CMU framework sets ambitious goals, it falls short in providing concrete mechanisms to channel capital towards green and social investments.
